How to compile an employee training plan

Good training and development programs help you retain the right people and grow profits. As the battle for top talent becomes more competitive, personal training courses in UK are more important than ever. Hiring top talent takes time and money, and how you engage and develop that talent from the time they are first onboarded impacts retention and business growth.

Offering accessible training will help set your company apart. But for you to create a training program that works, you need to be strategic in your approach. An effective training program is built by following a systematic, step-by step process.

  • Assess Training Needs: The first step in developing a training program is to identify and assess needs. Employee training needs may already be established in the organisation’s strategic, human resources or individual development plans.
  • Design the training program: Think of a design as a sort of outline. The design phase consists of identifying learning objectives that describe what the employee should be able to do upon completion of the training, and how these objectives will be measured. The objectives should match knowledge, skills, and attitudes that you identified in your training needs. You'll also determine how the course will be delivered, such as by an instructor in a classroom, online, or a blended approach.
  • Separate training sessions into soft and hard skill categories: Soft skills training includes topics such as customer service, policies, harassment, diversity, safety and other general information. Hard skills are those used to complete a specific task, such as machine operation or specific job procedures.
  • Implement Training Initiatives: The implementation phase is where the training program comes to life. Organisations need to decide whether training will be delivered in-house or externally coordinated. Program implementation includes the scheduling of training activities and organisation of any related resources (facilities, equipment, etc.). The training program is then officially launched, promoted and conducted. During training, participant progress should be monitored to ensure that the program is effective.
  • Measure Success: Measuring your training program’s success not only better prepares you for the next time you create a training program—it will also allow you to use your findings to improve your current program in real time. Once your program is in full swing, start monitoring engagement and training effectiveness through your training platform’s analytics and reporting feature. Then, translate those insights into actionable improvements you can make to your program.

Additionally, learner feedback can provide more profound insights into what is working and what isn’t. Ask your employees for feedback via surveys or questionnaires.
