This course covers the details and irreversibilities found in real-life chemical reactors due to the nature of design, mass and heat transfer and competing phenomena within the ‘ideal’ vessels. Transport phenomena, kinetics, thermodynamics, computational chemistry and CFD simulation are used to accurately represent the real-life environment and flows within real reactors.

Day 1: Reaction Kinetics and Thermodynamics

  • Reaction rates and rate constants (k values)
  • Energy diagrams and activation energy in chemical reactions
  • Equilibrium concepts and Le Chatelier's principle
  • Phase equilibrium and equilibrium shifts in chemical processes
     

Day 2: Catalytic Reactions and Computational Chemistry

  • Introduction to catalysts: chemical and physical structure
  • Catalyst poisoning, deactivation, and regeneration
  • Computational chemistry and CFD applications in catalyst design
  • Optimization techniques and industrial applications of catalytic processes
     

Day 3: Transport Limitations and Microkinetic Analysis

  • Internal and external transport effects on reaction rates
  • Mass transfer limitations and their impact on reactor performance
  • Microkinetic modelling of catalytic reactions
  • Case studies: ammonia synthesis and ethylene hydrogenation
     

Day 4: Non-Ideal Flow and Reactor Stability

  • Residence time distribution and its role in reactor design
  • Dispersion models for non-ideal reactors and non-ideal flow patterns
  • Axial and radial dispersion in plug flow reactors (PFR)
  • Non-isothermal reactor behaviour and stability analysis for exothermic reactions
     

Day 5: Heterogeneous Reactors and Data Analysis

  • Homogeneous vs. heterogeneous reactions in reactor systems
  • Fixed-bed reactors: 1D and 2D modelling approaches
  • Fluidized bed reactors and recirculation effects
  • Regression analysis techniques: least squares, correlation coefficients, and non-linear regression
