Course Overview

This seminar is addressed to both new and experienced users of chemical laboratories and theoretical chemists. Its first part deals with chemical calculations required for chemical reactions, balancing equations, mass and energy balances and every other everyday activity of the chemist. Kinetics, thermodynamics, chemical reactions, physical processes, pH, hydration, precipitation are included to show the requirement for efficient calculations by the chemist.

Second part includes an overview of most important chemical and physical processes employed in a chemical laboratory to achieve cleaning, recognition, measurement, transfer, purification, storage and reaction of chemicals. It also includes Health and Safety as well as Quality and Environmental Management procedures to design and maintain a QHSE Management environment. Related topics such as SDS and GHS systems are also presented. Experimental sessions are included in this course. Course duration is two weeks.

Objective:

By the end of the course, participants should have:

Clear understanding of the various physical and chemical processes in a laboratory environment
Knowledge of the various scientific principles involved
Knowledge on of the sampling, identification, storing, transferring and reaction methods
Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures
Knowledge of required modern instrumentation
Knowledge of QHSE procedures required
Knowledge of SDS and GHS classification systems
Knowledge of experimental set ups
Attended different live training sessions in academic or private laboratories
Understanding of pH and pOH calculations
Understanding of reaction kinetics and thermodynamics calculations
Understanding of mass and energy balances calculations
Understanding of important digits
Understanding of all critical arithmetical methods used in chemistry

Overview of SDS and GHS classification systems.
Laboratory setup and safety procedures.
Health and Safety guidelines for chemical laboratories.
Identifying hazardous materials and implementing safety measures.

Day 2: Chemical and Physical Processes in the Laboratory

Extraction and distillation methods.
Purification techniques in laboratory settings.
Methods of chemical transfer and handling chemicals safely.
Introduction to reaction methodologies and reactor fundamentals.

Day 3: Analytical Techniques and Instrumentation

Introduction to modern laboratory instrumentation.
Sensors and detectors in chemical analysis.
Calibration techniques for precise measurements.
Hands-on experience with glassware and digital equipment.

Day 4: Chemical Calculations and Thermodynamics

Mass and energy balances in chemical reactions.
pH, pOH, and acidity calculations.
Understanding reaction kinetics and thermodynamics.
Stoichiometry, molarity calculations, and precipitation analysis.

Day 5: Advanced Chemical Calculations and Laboratory Management

Advanced calculations for hydration, hydrated species, and concentration transformations.
Balancing chemical equations and reaction orders.
Key principles of QHSE and its implementation in laboratory environments.
Review of experimental sessions and laboratory operations.
