Course Overview

Process engineering is the most vital part of chemical engineering. It involves understanding, setting up and controlling physical and chemical processes, troubleshooting and optimizing their outcomes and estimating all costs included in doing so. Process engineering has evolved to a modern field that include the traditional fields of chemical engineering with the addition of simulation tools [computational chemistry, CFD and process simulation]. This course includes all the important elements of process engineering and the most important modern approaches for optimization of processes.

Objective:

By the end of this course, participants will:

Develop a fundamental and practical understanding of core processes in oil, gas, petrochemical, chemical, and allied facilities.
Understand the key principles and techniques of process engineering.
Gain a perspective on process optimization from a company viewpoint.
Learn to apply modern tools like computational chemistry, CFD, and process simulation for process design and optimization.

Day 1: Introduction to Process Engineering and Fundamentals

Overview of process engineering and its importance in industrial applications
Key principles: Mass balances, heat balances, and momentum balances
Introduction to standard process equipment: Reactors, tanks, pipes, and columns
Understanding process diagrams: P&IDs and flow charts
Thermodynamics and kinetics essentials for process engineers

Day 2: Process Design and Heat Transfer

Mass transfer principles and mechanisms in industrial processes
Heat transfer principles: Conductivity and heat exchangers
Design and operation of heat exchangers, steam reboilers, and condensers
Classification, maintenance, and inspection of industrial furnaces and insulation
Fluid flow: Single-phase vs multi-phase and single-component vs multi-component systems

Day 3: Fluid Dynamics, Chemical Reactors, and Separation Processes

Understanding fluid flow: Equilibrium, enthalpy vs entropy, and transport phenomena
Advanced flow calculations and Bernoulli's theorem
Chemical reactors: Types, kinetics, thermodynamics, and industrial reactors
Catalytic reactions and multi-step reaction mechanisms
Separation processes: Adsorption, absorption, extraction, and chromatography

Day 4: Process Control and Computational Tools

Process control fundamentals: Flow charts, sensors, detectors, and control systems
Types of control systems: Feedforward, feedback, and cascade control
Mathematical modelling vs process simulation in control systems
Introduction to CFD tools and their application in process control
Accuracy, response times, and system types: Hydraulic vs electrohydraulic

Day 5: Distillation, Pressure Vessels, and Economic Considerations

Distillation principles, column design, operation, and troubleshooting
Overview of pressure vessels in process engineering
Economic analysis of process engineering: Preliminary analysis, cost indexes, and break-even analysis
Process simulation vs experience: Capital vs operational costs, fixed vs variable costs
Understanding annual costs and the role of process optimization in improving profitability
