Course Overview

Occupational health is a multifaceted activity, which deals with the two-way interaction between health and work with the aim to prevent ill health in employed populations. This requires input from various occupational health professionals and the provision of effective occupational health services. A key component of the service provision and current health and safety legislation is the need to systematically assess and manage significant health risks. This requires an evidence-based approach enabling the identification of risks, individuals at risk as well implementation of cost effective control measures. In this program you will learn how to:

  • Provide a framework for assessing and managing occupational health risks irrespective of the hazards encountered in different industrial sectors
  • Key components of the framework are discussed with emphasis on monitoring exposure levels, assessment of controls and surveillance of health status

Objective:

Participants attending the program will:

  • Systematically identify a range of occupational health hazards in different industrial setting using a range techniques and data sources
  • Explain the role of different health & professionals and their contribution to the prevention of adverse ill health effects from industrial exposures
  • Explain the basis of occupational limits and their interpretation
  • Understand different occupational health management models and need to justify services and their effectiveness
  • Assess the need and appropriateness of health surveillance, pre-employment assessment and fitness for work
  • Describe range of routine health surveillance and biological monitoring techniques and their limitations
  • Calculate and interpret occupational exposure data for a range of physical, chemical and biological hazards
  • Explain techniques and instrumentation used to evaluate exposure and units of measurements
  • Understand legal frameworks and their requirements for compliance including data reliability, record keeping, competence and suitability of assessments
  • Explain principles and strategies for collection occupational exposure data
  • Justify selection of control measures (engineering, personal protection, administrative) and understanding of tests used to assess suitability and effectiveness of systems used to minimize exposure
  • Develop and evaluate risk assessment programs.
  • Work more effectively with other occupational and safety professionals
