This course develops the core capabilities required to plan, conduct and record valid, reliable and fair assessments in the workplace and competency-based learning. Participants learn how to interpret standards and assessment criteria, design assessment plans and instruments, select appropriate methods (observation, questioning, product evidence, professional discussion), and make consistent judgements aligned to quality assurance requirements. The programme also covers evidence sufficiency, authenticity, and currency, as well as feedback that supports progress, reasonable adjustments, record-keeping, and collaboration with internal quality assurers, ensuring assessments are ethical, defensible, and improvement-focused.

Day 1 — Foundations of Competency Assessment

  • Role of the assessor, assessment cycle and key terminology
  • Understanding standards, outcomes, performance and knowledge criteria
  • Evidence types and rules: validity, reliability, sufficiency, authenticity, currency
  • Equality, diversity, inclusion, ethics and reasonable adjustments

Day 2 — Planning and Instruments

  • Interpreting standards into assessment plans and schedules
  • Selecting methods: observation, questioning, product and witness evidence
  • Designing instruments: checklists, question banks, decision records
  • Risk considerations, consent, confidentiality and data protection

Day 3 — Conducting Assessment

  • Preparing candidates and setting expectations and boundaries
  • Observation techniques and evidence capture in live environments
  • Effective questioning and professional discussion aligned to criteria
  • Managing conflicts of interest, interruptions and borderline performance

Day 4 — Judgement and Feedback

  • Weighing evidence and making consistent decisions with clear rationales
  • Recording outcomes, actions and progression routes
  • Feedback that motivates improvement and secures learner ownership
  • Action planning, review cycles and escalation pathways

Day 5 — Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement

  • Interface with internal quality assurance and sampling strategies
  • Standardisation activities and maintaining assessor consistency
  • Documentation standards, audit readiness and version control
  • Using assessment data to improve delivery and learner outcomes
