Course Overview

Every organization must design its production system. This process starts with the design of the product or service to be produced.

It is important to remember that the way a product or service is designed affects its appeal to the customers it also affects how easy or expensive operations will be. Design has become a critical aspect of product development for many companies.

However some product design are difficult to execute properly, when the ski manufacture VOLANT began manufacturing an unconventional type of skis from steel, skiers began snapping them up, delighted with their flexibility and grip of the snow, however producing the skis turned out to be a nightmare and many parts had to be scrapped or reworked, expenses mounted. Volant hired a design engineer ex-Boeing he made a small design change which allowed for more tolerances, the design change had a big effect with the company going into the black in the first year. To prevent such problems in the first place a growing number of businesses are using Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DEMA)

This course will highlight the distinct benefits of applying such techniques.

Objective:

The course is designed to help and advice on developing design skills for the design engineers. Not so much on how to use the many software programs and hardware but more on how the design engineers can develop expertise and knowledge and understanding required to identify and research the important issues to develop a specification.

Course Outline

Day 1

  • Understanding the benefits of DEMA
  • Four objectives of product design
  • Productivity
  • Cost
  • Quality
  • Reliability

Day 2

  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) a clear understanding
  • What is a cross functional team
  • DFM within the Product Development
  • Overview of the DFM process
  • Estimate the manufacturing costs
  • Reduce cost of components
  • Reduce costs of assembly
  • Reduce cost of supporting production
  • Consider impacts on other factors

Day 3

  • Further advice on design skills
  • Design engineers need the key skills, knowledge and understanding before they can analyse a brief. Research alone does not produce successful analysis
  • Design engineers, must be provided with a design brief
  • How to retrieve specific information and function
  • Aesthetics
  • Performance
  • Target markets.
  • Discuss the important role a specification plays in the development of a design
  • How to develop skills knowledge and understanding

Day 4

  • Further Advice on developing design Skills
  • How to compare effective specification and ineffective specification
  • How to compile a design specification and explain in the class (using a NOBO board)
  • How to develop the thinking skills required to generate creative and original ideas
  • How to experiment with different techniques to generate ideas
  • Use a morphological analysis matrix
  • Organise and carry out a brainstorming session for a specific task

Day 5

  • Further advice on developing knowledge and understanding for design engineers
  • How Participants should develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
  • Appropriate methods of gathering data
  • Reasons for selecting research techniques
  • Key stages of questionnaires and user trips
  • How and why a specification is used in the design process
  • How to reduce cost of assembly
  • How to keep score
  • DFA index = (Theoretical minimum number of parts) x (3 seconds) / (estimated Total assembly time)
  • How to reduce the cost of assembly
  • How modelling could be used to generate and explore, test and refine, and communicate throughout the design stage
  • Useful activities and approaches for the design engineers
  • Analyse existing folios and exemplars to identify how models have been used and whether they have been effective in the development of the proposal
  • How to match suitable models to suitable purposes.
  • Training Methodology
  • Fully comprehensive workbook will be provided
  • Supporting power point presentations
  • Videos showing effective methods in design techniques for designing Manufacturing & Assemblies
  • Self Assed questions
