Course Overview

Work in a laboratory exposes a person to risk of injury and illness from hazardous materials and equipment. Regulations and guidelines, however well conceived, are not sufficient to achieve safe laboratory practice. It is the skill, knowledge and basic common sense of the individual laboratory worker that is crucial to a safety program.

Laboratory Safety course designed to review the fundamentals of lab safety and assist scientists, chemists and other personnel working in the laboratory in the development or improvement of their lab safety program. Participants discuss important laboratory safety problems and find solutions for many of them. The course emphasizes the need to make health, safety, and the environment an integral and important part of science education, work, and life.

Identify and manage hazardous materials and equipment in the lab.
Develop effective laboratory safety programs and practices.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Laboratory Safety and Chemical Storage

Overview of Laboratory Safety Policy and Safety Manual.
Safety orientations for laboratory personnel and the importance of awareness.
Characteristics and hazards of chemicals, including explosion potential.
Chemical storage requirements for both inorganic and organic substances.
Handling toxic chemicals and labelling protocols.
Ventilation requirements and safety measures for compressed gases.
Oxygen and oxidizing gases: safety considerations.
Hazard checklist, record-keeping, and chemical inventory management.

Day 2: Hazardous Waste Management and Electrical Safety

Understanding hazardous waste, including multi-hazardous waste.
Procedures for hazardous drain disposal and satellite accumulation.
Allowable amounts for waste accumulation and inspection procedures.
Chemical pickup requests and protocols for hazardous chemical spills.
Principles of electrical energy safety in the laboratory.

Day 3: Laboratory Ergonomics and Safe Chemical Handling

Best practices for working at a bench or hood.
Proper positioning and handling of compressed gas cylinders.
Safe lifting techniques to avoid injury.
Precautions for handling chemicals, including protective equipment (clothing, glassware, etc.).
Guidelines for lifting, handling, and decontaminating hazardous substances.
The importance of awareness training and regular safety updates.

Day 4: Legal Requirements and Material Safety Data Sheets

Overview of health and safety at work regulations.
Understanding COSHH regulations and their application in the lab.
The role of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) in maintaining a safe environment.
Key sections of the MSDS and how each can help employees with their work.

Day 5: Emergency Procedures and Quality Assurance

Planning for laboratory emergencies, including preventing injuries and property damage.
Fire safety procedures and fire control measures in the laboratory.
Incident/accident reporting systems and protocols.
The benefits of an effective quality assurance process include ensuring lab safety.
Overview of OSHA laboratory standards and compliance.
