No prior experience with specialist tools is assumed; you'll build confidence step by step, working with real datasets and practical exercises throughout.

Day 1: Why Data Visualisation Matters

What data visualisation is and where it fits in everyday work
How humans process visual information, key perceptual principles
Common goals: exploration, explanation and persuasion
Real-world case studies: visuals that informed decisions and ones that misled
Overview of tools covered during the week: Excel, Power BI and others

Day 2: Choosing the Right Chart

Chart types and when to use them: bar, line, scatter, pie and beyond
Matching chart choice to data type: categorical, continuous, time-series
Audience considerations: what works in a boardroom vs a technical report
Hands-on exercise: selecting and justifying chart types for sample datasets
Spotting poor chart choices and understanding why they mislead

Day 3: Design Principles and Visual Clarity

Using colour effectively, contrast, palette selection and accessibility (WCAG guidance)
Reducing clutter: removing chart junk, gridlines and redundant labels
Typography, titles and annotations that guide the reader's eye
Practical session: redesigning weak visuals from real-world examples
Introduction to pre-attentive attributes, size, shape, position and hue

Day 4: Building Visuals with Excel and Power BI

Creating and formatting charts in Microsoft Excel: tips most users miss
Introduction to Power BI: connecting data, building a first report
Filters, slicers and interactive elements, what they add for the end user
Combining multiple visuals into a simple, coherent dashboard layout

Day 5: Communicating Data to Real Audiences

Telling a story with data: structuring a narrative around your visuals
Presenting to non-technical stakeholders, language, pace and focus
Accessibility checks before publishing: colour blindness, screen readers, print
Delegate presentations: each participant walks through a visual they have built
