Are you looking to build robust, scalable, and efficient databases from the ground up? Our 5-day Relational Database Design: Tools and Techniques course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of database architecture and data modelling. Led by industry experts, this course will cover the fundamentals of relational theory, practical data modelling, and the normalisation techniques required to ensure data integrity.

You'll learn how to evaluate business requirements, translate them into logical data models, and apply normalisation to eliminate redundancy. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the role of keys and constraints in maintaining data integrity.

In addition, you'll develop practical skills using leading web-based tools, such as Lucidchart and SqlDBM, to create your data models and then implement them in SQLite, bringing your designs to life. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to become a proficient database designer.

Objective:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Understand the fundamentals of the relational model and data integrity.
Apply normalization techniques (1NF, 2NF, 3NF) to design efficient databases.
Create and interpret Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) using Lucidchart.
Use a specialised tool like SqlDBM to refine models and generate SQL.
Implement and modify database schemas in SQLite using SQL Data Definition Language (DDL).

Course Outline

DAY 1: FOUNDATIONS OF RELATIONAL DATABASES

Overview of relational database management systems (RDBMS).
The importance of database design: Data integrity, performance, and scalability.
Core concepts: Entities, attributes, tuples, and relationships.
Exploring case studies of good and bad database design.

DAY 2: DATABASE NORMALIZATION TECHNIQUES

Understanding data redundancy and update anomalies.
First Normal Form (1NF): Ensuring atomicity.
Second (2NF) and Third (3NF) Normal Forms: Eliminating functional dependencies.
Workshop: Normalising a sample "messy" dataset (e.g., a spreadsheet) on paper or a whiteboard.

DAY 3: PRACTICAL DATA MODELING WITH VISUAL TOOLS

Introduction to ERD notations (e.g., Crow's Foot).
Modeling keys and relationships (One-to-One, One-to-Many, Many-to-Many).
Tool Workshop 1: Using Lucidchart to create a conceptual ERD, focusing on entities and relationships.
Tool Workshop 2: Re-building the ERD in SQLDBM to create a logical/physical model with specific data types and constraints.

DAY 4: IMPLEMENTING SCHEMAS WITH SQL AND SQLITE

Introduction to SQL Data Definition Language (DDL): CREATE, ALTER, DROP.
Tool Bridge: Auto-generating the DDL script from your SqlDBM project.
Enforcing data integrity: PRIMARY KEY, FOREIGN KEY, UNIQUE, NOT NULL.
Tool Workshop: Using a web-based SQLite fiddle (e.g., sqliteonline.com) to execute your DDL script, create your database, and run simple queries.

DAY 5: REVIEW, REFINEMENT, AND REAL-WORLD CONTEXT

Recap: From business requirement -> Lucidchart (conceptual) -> SqlDBM (logical) -> SQLite (physical).
Common design patterns (e.g., junction tables, self-referencing keys).
Introduction to Indexes: The "why" and "when" for performance.
Tool Demonstration: Using a free desktop GUI (like DB Browser for SQLite) to visually open and inspect the database file created on Day 4.
