Course Overview

Decades of research now point to Emotional Intelligence (EI) as the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack.  For example one meta-study published by the World Economic Forum found that 90% of top performers are also high in emotional intelligence. On the flip side, just 20% of bottom performers are high in emotional intelligence. You can be a top performer without emotional intelligence, but the chances are slim.

High emotional intelligence correlates with positive outcomes for leaders, teams and organisations.  It’s strongly tied with higher performance and earnings.  EI enables improved decision making, focus, teamwork, productivity and business networks; and reduces employee turnover, unhealthy conflict, and stress.

In this programme you’ll learn that EI can be developed, and how you can do this yourself.

We will use Daniel Goleman’s model of Emotional Intelligence, which consists of 4 domains and 12 emotional and social competencies.

Course Outline

Day 1 – The Emotional Intelligence Landscape

  • The Emotional Intelligence model developed by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis
  • Data about the power of EI
  • What the latest Neuroscience tells us about EI and human behaviour

Domain 1:  Self Awareness

  • Explore the foundation stone of EI, Self Awareness, with theory, practical exercises and assessments
  • We will start to develop your Coach & Mentor skills to support each other’s development

Day 2 – Self Management

  • Explore the fundamentals of EI, with theory, practical exercises and personal action
  • Opportunities to practise your Coach & Mentor competency further
  • Domain 2:  Self Management, consisting of 4 competencies
    • Emotional Balance – building the muscle of skilful responses to emotional triggers
    • Adaptability – applying EI to attitudes toward change
    • Positive Outlook – learn from the psychological sciences, ways to develop your own and that of your high-performing teams
    • Achievement Orientation – assess your motivations and the ways these help and hinder your best performance

Day 3 – Social Awareness

  • This is where the work of impactful Leadership happens
  • We will turn our attention to how we interact with others, with theory, practical exercises and personal action
  • Domain 3: Social Awareness, consisting of 2 competencies
    • Empathy – a practical and structured approach to tuning in to others, whether you are seeking to influence upwards, lead your reports, or better serve your customers and other stakeholders
    • Organisational Awareness – understanding how the human system of your organisation and its wider context operates, and how decisions are made

Day 4 – Relationship Management

  • This is where the ‘rubber hits the road’ as we explore how you impact others
  • Domain 4:  Relationship Management, consisting of 5 competencies
    • Influence – applying EI to the essential ability to influence others, at all levels
    • Coach & Mentor – a look at how EI interacts with this core leadership competency, as we continue to practise in small groups
    • Inspirational Leadership – dialling in to your personal leadership identity
    • Conflict Management – we shouldn’t hope to avoid conflict altogether, it’s inevitable and can be healthy; explore a proactive approach to handling conflict skilfully
    • Teamwork – applying EI to high-performing teams

  • Action Planning – Your Takeaways for Continuing EI Development
