Course Overview

This comprehensive 5-day training programme provides engineering professionals with the foundational knowledge and practical tools to understand, design, and evaluate piping systems in accordance with international codes and industry best practices. Focusing on mechanical integrity, stress analysis, and degradation control, the course equips participants to improve the safety, reliability, and maintainability of piping systems in process industries.

Through real-world case studies and hands-on methods, participants will explore the interconnected factors that influence piping performance, from design and materials to operating conditions, corrosion mechanisms, and preventive maintenance.

Objective:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Elevate their comprehension of piping systems' mechanical integrity and interdependence with proper design, operation, condition assessment, and maintenance.
  • Acquire practical methods and tools for basic design calculations following industrial codes and best practices related to pressure equipment.
  • Understand degradation mechanisms affecting process equipment, methods to identify and predict impact, and measures for prevention and control.
  • Apply piping stress analysis principles to identify critical loads and evaluate system reliability.
  • Interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), isometrics, and layout considerations.
  • Evaluate support systems, expansion loops, and dynamic effects such as vibration and thermal expansion.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Piping Systems and Design Standards

  • Overview of industrial piping systems and applications
  • Key terminology and components: valves, flanges, supports, fittings
  • Introduction to ASME B31.3, B31.1, and relevant international codes
  • Piping design principles: pressure, temperature, material compatibility

Day 2: Piping Layout, Support Design & Core Calculations (Condensed)

  • Interpret piping layouts, isometrics, and general arrangement drawings to understand design intent and spatial coordination.
  • Perform basic piping design calculations, including pipe wall thickness, pressure drop, and sizing by code requirements.
  • Design and apply rigid pipe supports, considering their structural role, design flexibility, and field adjustability.
  • Select and customise spring supports (variable, constant, big-ton) based on thermal expansion, system loads, and operating conditions.
  • Understand and apply restraints for dynamic load control, including hydraulic snubbers, sway struts, and mechanical dampeners.
  • Integrate pipe support strategies with overall piping system layout, balancing functionality, cost-efficiency, and ease of maintenance.

Day 3: Piping Stress Analysis and Flexibility Considerations

  • Introduction to piping stress types: thermal, pressure, dead weight, wind, seismic
  • Static and dynamic loads in piping systems
  • Flexibility analysis and use of expansion loops and joints
  • Support and anchor types: fixed, spring hangers, guides

Day 4: Mechanical Integrity and Condition Assessment

  • Lifecycle management of piping systems
  • Inspection techniques: ultrasonic, radiographic, hydrotesting
  • Common Failure modes: fatigue, creep, erosion, vibration
  • Case study: root cause analysis of a piping failure

Day 5: Degradation Mechanisms and Risk Mitigation

  • Overview of degradation threats: corrosion, SCC, hydrogen embrittlement
  • Corrosion mapping and remaining life assessments
  • Prevention and mitigation strategies: coatings, cathodic protection, materials upgrade
  • Integrating piping inspection with RBI and maintenance planning
